Shopkeeper raises questions about police action, entire robbery captured on CCTV

Jalandhar: In the Khigra Gate area under Police Station No. 3, thieves targeted a mill and a grocery shop. Late at night, two thieves arrived on a white Activa without a number plate and escaped with thousands of rupees in cash, dry fruit and desi ghee from the shop. The entire incident was recorded by the shop’s CCTV cameras.

Shopkeeper Harmit Singh said he locked the shop and went home around 9 p.m. In the morning, neighbors informed him that the shop’s shutter had been torn off. When he reached the site, he found cash of about 10,000–12,000 rupees, almonds, cashews, soyi and other dry fruits, as well as boxes of desi ghee missing.

CCTV footage shows that around 2:30 a.m., two thieves arrived on the Activa outside the shop. One thief, with his face covered, entered the shop while the other stood outside on the Activa. The intruder filled bags with dry fruit and took the boxes of desi ghee with him. He then also removed the cash kept in the safe.

Surprisingly, the thieves did not break the shop’s lock; instead, they ripped off the shutter’s leaf, causing damage worth about 25,000 rupees to the shutter.

After the incident, the shopkeeper expressed concern over the continuous thefts in the area. He alleges that drug‑addicted individuals in the locality are committing robberies to fund their habit. He also questioned the police night patrol, stating that police personnel are not seen in the area late at night.

According to the shopkeeper, a neighbor’s new Activa was also stolen some time ago, and despite filing a complaint, the police did not come to investigate the scene. For this reason, the shopkeeper is hesitant to lodge another complaint at the police station.
